The lake's shad population is up all over the lake, driving a hot bass bite. It was all reaction this week, with the largies schooling up and chasing bait on secondary, and main lake points. Most fish are in the 2 to 3 lb range, with occasional 5's and 6's in the mix. The exception was a 10.75 brute caught from the baknk by Steve Clark of Santa Margarita. The abundance of shad also fueled crappie, a bluegill and woke up some of the lakes big blue catfish. Ed Conway celebrated his 70th birthday by catching 17.5 kittie from a float tube. There were several other fish reported at the marina that all broke the 10 lb. mark.

Both of the big cats fell for...... Read More

Santa Margarita LakeThe small cold front that came through last week had slowed the action some, but by the end of the week the largies went on the chew. Spinnerbaits, chatterbaits, square bills, swimjigs, and everything in between all caught fish. The crappie showed for those targeting them on rocky outcroppings throughout the lake. Mini jigs tipped with either a mealworm or crappie nibble was top bait choice. The catfish population is alive and well for anyone targeting them. Best locations are...... Read More
