High winds close Lake this afternoon to boaters. The long range forecast calls for winds to subside by the weekend but look for partly cloudy conditions and chance of showers until at least midweek.
The Lake is full to the brim and will continue to cascade over the spillway as long as the rain continues. Bank and surface conditions will improve as the wind subsides and some clearing skies arrive starting this weekend. Recent rains have again muddied the waters and deposited lots of debris which has limited visibility to 6 to 8 feet at best. Water temps are constant, 46 degrees at 20'and 50 degrees at surface as measured in the Marina.
Only saw a few bank anglers this morning due to the high winds. I'm sure they will be returning to the popular spots once the weather lifts. Good areas lately have been opposite the EBMUD boathouse, Launch Ramp, TomSawyerIsland, the banks on either side of the Marina gangway and Rainbow Point. Try silver/blue Kastmasters soon after the plant, a black wooly bugger behind a clear bobber/float and sliding sinker set ups thereafter. The Marina says the chartreuse garlic flavored Power Bait with sparkles is working the best of all the available varieties.
Trollers continue to work the River Arm from Columbia Gulch to Indian Rock. The Kokanee are congregating very close to the surface in the first 10 ft. All last week the Kokanee were in this area and biting on Apex lures tipped with scented shoe peg corn. Trout are also active in the same region but a bit deeper at 20 feet and they prefer Uncle Larry's lures with worms and or corn. Still no reports of German Browns but they will show up soon, try a mid-size broken back Rapala trout minnow behind a silver/green dodger at 50 feet near the Rock Wall, some beautiful fish come out of there every year.
Success Stories:
Dale Rose of Valley Springs a long time Park resident and avid fisherman got these nice Kokes in the River Arm at 5-15 ft using Apex lures with corn and also these Rainbows in the vicinity with Uncle Larry's and worms-Congratulations Dale-nice job!
To date Pardee Lake Recreation has planted 22,800 lbs in combination with The California Dept of Fish and Game plants of 5,200 lb for a grand total of 28,000 lbs of Rainbow Trout. There is another plant scheduled for this afternoon.
