The trout action is hot at Shaver Lake

The trout action is hot at Shaver Lake says guide Dick Nichols of Dick's Fishing Charters. His clients have scored multiple limits over the past month and one half and continued the success into the weekend. He says the best action has been in the early morning hours near the island and Black Rock areas. Depth is the important factor in trolling. 21 to 40 feet deep is the normal depth to locate most of the fish. Nichols continues to troll Trout Busters with a tip of crawler behind a Mountain Flasher at 21 feet deep on the side poles and Trout Busters with crawler behind a Shaver Lake Dodger at 32 to 40 feet deep on the downriggers. The 70 degree surface water has caused the fish to search for more comfortable levels in the lake.

Some trophy sized fish have been coming in but are fewer now that the big fish have had a chance to scatter. Nichols has spotted many trophy sized trout feeding on the surface around 5 to 6:30 am in the coves of the lake. He recommends rapalas trolled near the surface to have a chance at enticing a big fish during their surface feeding time. Bank fishing has been hit or miss using Power bait or crawlers. Roads 1 and 2, the Point, Sierra Marina and Shaver Marina areas have been popular.

Anchored boat fishing is not doing what it was a few months ago. Trollers are doing better. For those who thought the brown trout were killed last year, Michael Russler of Fresno, caught a nice brown in Shaver while trolling a Rapala lure.

In another matter, the Shaver Lake Trophy Trout project voted last week to plant an additional approximate 1,500, 3 plus pound trophy sized fish, to go with the planned plant of 2,500 5 to 6 pound rainbow's. The total will be around 4,000 trophies 3 to 6 pounds for the Spring of 2012. This was all possible due to the heavy donations from valley anglers. SLTTP is now working on the 2014 purchase of trophies. A plant of approximately 80,000 kokanee fingerling was made last month. The 2014 season will open with mature kokanee for the first time since the 2011 season.

With a continued bite since early June, guide Dick Nichols, of Dick's Fishing Charters, says his clients are going home with their limits on a regular basis. Some trophy sized trout have been caught during those trips. With a DFG plant last week, Nichols anticipates the bite to continue with an occasional trophy trout being caught. He continues to fish the island, Black Rock and Eagle Point using Trout...... Read More

Hi all. Bob Bernier did a nice job putting his friend onto this fish. Wow! We got a 5 today and a couple limits, I was very happy and now even more so as this fish was caught on a Trout Buster behind a Mountain Flasher. He must have been 21 feet down as I think he fishes 100 feet back with his Mountain Flasher. The fish was weighed and measured by Dick Gomez at...... Read More
