Fishing at Shaver Lake could hardly be better than it was last week

Fishing at Shaver Lake has taken a big improvement this past week. In fact, it could not get much better. Shaver Lake guide Dick Nichols, of Dick's Fishing Charters, says that his clients having been boating multiple limits on each trip this past week.

He has fished 12 of the last 14 day's. Nichols said that he continues to troll with Trout Busters with a tip of crawler behind Mountain Flashers at 21 feet deep. His down riggers also have Trout Buster behind Shaver Lake Dodgers and C.J. Dodgers at 34 feet deep. The fish have settled in between 21 and 34 feet this week as the surface water has raised to 65 and 66 degrees. Other trollers pulling a variety of lures including the popular Trout Busters, have been connecting with limits daily. Unknown how long this success will be.

The water level has dropped a couple percent to 70% capacity this week, which may have caused an eating frenzy by the trout. Few big fish were recorded trolling this past week.

Shore and anchored boat anglers are catching a few trophies each week. Larry Nicholson of Fresno, landed a 7 pound 15 ounce bow from his anchored boat near the Shaver Lake Marina on Power Bait. Dyanna Baker and Norm Thaxter, both of Shaver Lake, both caught 5 pounders, on separate trips, from the shore near road's one and two, also on Power bait. All were weighed in at Shaver Lake Sports, one of the two official SLTTP weigh in stations in Shaver. The other is Young's Sporting Goods in Shaver. Young's also weighed in some nice trophies this week.

Nichols feels the bite will continue for a while. Heavy trolling traffic and wall to wall bank fishermen on the weekends could log a few more big trout. Shaver Lake has become the place to be this past few weeks due to the trophy sized trout, good overall fishing and the high temperatures in the Valley, with cool low 80's weather on the lake.

The Shaver Lake Trophy Trout Project's 2nd Annual Sportsmen's Dinner will be held on August 18th at the Shaver Lake Community Center. All proceeds go directly to purchase more big trophy sized trout. 160 tickets went on sale the day after Memorial Day and sold out by afternoon.
