Between snow storms, Shaver Lake continued to kick out trophy sized trout along with nice trout in the 12 to 14 inch category. Dick Nichols, of Dick's Fishing Charters, said that most trollers are catching fish perhaps a couple limits on some trips this past week. The island, Black Rock and the dam all have been good spots to troll at 20 to 25 feet down using beaded spinners with a tip of crawler or a variety of spoons. Shaver Lake Trophy Trout Project planting chairman Bob Bernier confirmed Thursday night, at the big Herb Bauer's Sporting Goods Shaver Lake seminar, that the trophy trout had been planted this past week. Bernier told the crowd of 130 people that the majority of the fish are between 3 and 4 pounds, several at 8 pounds and a couple at 12 pounds. And so trollers, as well as bank fishermen, are picking up trophy sized trout each day since the plant. This week Mandi Colburn of Ken's Market reported a 4 pounder and Debby Dixon of Shaver Lake Sports weighed in the leading trophy fish in the Herb Bauer's Shaver Lake season derby so far, a 4.6 pounder caught by Hajimu Fujii of Clovis. Fujii caught his big guy near the Point. The Herb Bauer's /Shaver Lake derby runs to the end of December. Ken's market and the Shaver lake Sports are the official weigh in stations and generally photograph the catches. Obviously bank fishermen are collecting a trophy trout most every day. The past week 5 trophy Trout were taken from the bank, mostly around the Point and the Dam with Power Bait in green or rainbow or crawlers. It should be an excellent season with our trophy trout along with kokanee. Dick Nichols (559) 841-3317; Shaver Lake Marina (559) 841-3324; Shaver Lake Sports (559) 841-2740
