Lake Almanor - CA (Plumas County)

Surface temps are soaring as this warm spell has pushed the top water close to 72 degrees. Clarity is still good, about 14+ ft. As we complete the moon phase from that super moon last week, expect the bite to pick up again. Fish feeding in the moonlight has made the last few days tough on the trolling. Radio chatter from other boats is on par with our results the past few days. A few fish early then it shuts down till late afternoon till dark. Hot days and flat water, no good for trolling, but conducive to bait fishing. Big Springs, the A-Frame, are good places to drown worms or crickets. The hex hatch, along with other aquatic insect hatches, have the fish still looking at bugs, especially from Bunell Point to Goose Island, West side of the Peninsula, and toward Almanor West. Very little smelt in the fish we checked...although they, the smelt, are moving around the lake, bugs are a easier target for feeding Trout and Salmon.
Good one day and off the next, that big moon has fishing feeding cycles all over the range, but should get back to normal feeding patterns by Thursday. The water boils briefly with action at dusk as Mayflies drying their wings before flight are attacked from below. Mooching crickets around Goose Island, Spar Buoy and the Fox Farm should really turn on...along with the trolling bite. Anchovy tails at Big Springs, yep we're getting some light action in there now. Expect fish to begin to hold at springs as the surface continues to warms compressing the thermocline.
We trolled the past few days with moderate action, mostly small salmon and a few 2 lb. Browns were happening, however, we occasionally popped bigger fish to 4.4 lbs.., but it’s a grind.Doug Neal: (530) 258-6732 http://www.almanorfishingadventures.com
