Our surface temperature is 65 degrees which means the lake is "turning over". When the lake turns, the temperature is the same from top to bottom and the thermocline has gone. The thermocline only appears after the lake "warms up" again which won't occur until late spring. With the absence of the thermocline, the trout are now EVERYWHERE and not deep where they hide during the summer when the surface temperature is too high for their survival. Jerry Mattingly of Sacramento caught 2 trout right off the boat dock, a good inclination that they have risen to the surface. Jerry used waxworms for bait, and oh yeah! he also caught a Bass. The trout only come up in the fall when the surface temperature drops under 68 degrees. The main reason they come to the top is to feed of the threadthin shad which are hatching by the thousands. The shad only hatch in the fall and create plentiful food for our fish population overall. After the fish gorge on the shad they are pretty docile for the rest of the winter. It's almost like a squirrel storing food for the winter. Young Rocky aka (Bro) caught a trout in Elmer's Cove along with a great lookin Crappie while tossing worms from their boat. Master Scotty Linnenkohl fished from shore on the east bank also using worms and he netted a 3 lb.4 oz. Catfish for his parents! As of this Friday we plan on abandoning the main boat launching ramp until the lake fills up more. We have an alternate launch ramp which is gravelled and will accommodate 2 wheel or 4X4 trucks. This ramp is located close to our dam at Road 6 . For campers who have Motorhomes and want to bring their boats, we will be launching them and taking them out for you at no cost to you during this period of time.
