Oroville Quagga Mussels
Lake Oroville - Oroville, CA (Butte County)
by Steve Carson
4-27-2012
Potential disaster was avoided during a very close call with the infamous quagga mussels at Lime Saddle Marina on Lake Oroville last week, thanks to the sharp eyes and diligence of State Park Ranger Bryan Taylor and DFG Warden Lt. Sam Castillo.
A large houseboat being transported from Lake Mead [known for quagga infestation] was in the process of being launched, when Taylor discovered hundreds of mussels on the outdrive and hull. The vessel's owner had paid to have it cleaned, mistakenly thinking that was sufficient, but the active inspection program on the lake saved the day.
