With The French Fire actively burning in the Isabella area, HWY 178 is closed for traffic at the Isabella Turnoff. The Upper Kern may be closed for fish or could be closed any day do to the hazard posed from the fire. The Upper Kern is starting to clear up from the thunderstorms a few weeks ago. The flows are less than 100 CFS and anglers are encouraged to me mindful of the native trout and only fish from sunup until 10am due to the warm water. The trout action has been slow and those that are connecting have been with artificials, minijigs, worms, crickets, and salmon eggs. Fly anglers have had better luck in the early morning using the Kern Candy. In the Lower Kern the Smallmouth and Largemouth Bass action has been very good with Get Bent Baits and Spinners. Catfish are being caught with worms, chicken liver and cutbait. At the time of reporting, the Upper Kern River at Kernville was flowing at 75 CFS and the Lower Kern River was flowing at 131 CFS.
