GENERAL CONDITIONS
Lake Camanche's current elevation is 200.81 feet above sea level, a rise of 1.21 feet since last Sunday. The lake elevation will continue to rise this week. The water temperature is 61?? at the North marina. The water is still relatively clear in the lower lake and has a slight chocolate-color upriver. Since the January 4th fish report the lake has risen 13.17 feet in approximately 3 months.
TROUT
Trout fishing remains strong with many boats taking limits. Trollers working the west end of the lake are doing best with night crawlers or Sep's orange grubs behind a dodger from 25 to 35 feet during midday hours. Rapala lures are consistently catching fish using the blue/silver or the new hot mustard muddler.
Russ Seiber from Elk Grove nailed a 8.73 pound defiant rainbow with a Rapala trolling in the Hat Island area. Bank fishermen are doing best at either Well's Fargo or School's Credit Union. On a more serious note, if you're fishing off of the shore at Camanche, the best areas would include the north shore day use area or low water ramp at south shore. The best bait to use would be a night crawler paired up with green or yellow powerbait in 20 to 30 feet of water. Susan Sheehan from Camanche "tamed the beast" with her spectacular talent and ability to rule the wild kingdom by bagging a 6.74 beauty. She used powerbait at the North Shore day use area. Trout Pond Action still hot with small rafters and float tubers doing the best in the middle. Dumping large loads continues to be the trend with 1,200 pounds of fish going into both the south lake and pond last week totaling a 2,400 lb. plant. This week we are scheduled to plant 1,800 pounds of trout in the main lake at the North ramp.
BASS
Bass anglers are catching nice fish in this pre spawn pattern. Many of the bigger ones are being caught in the 8 to 12 foot zone at the mouth or entrances of main spawning coves. Use a 4 or 6 inch plastic worm in browns, greens and salt/pepper or crannkbaits, spinnerbaits in white/chartreuse or silver/black. The next full moon should be the best time for successful spawning to occur.
CATFISH
Catfish are picking up in a steady fashion with many anglers reporting catching these active warm water bottom feeders trolling for trout. Use a night crawler or Berkley catfish bait in coves 15 to 25 feet deep.
Ron Martin from Brentwood came out victorious after battling an 11 pound catfish on 4 lb line. He caught this unruly whiskerfish in the north harbor with a night crawler in 12 feet of water.
CRAPPIE
Crappie catching is still good with rooster tails or Kastmasters casting and retrieving up against steep, rugged, rocky banks and/or dunking a live minnow in 5 to 15 feet of water in warm coves with submerged brushy vegetation. Crappie should appear in great numbers here very soon and live minnows are now available at the north marina.
