It is not often that fake bait out fishes the real thing. On Monday, my guys Gary and Paul had no success with roe and worms, but landed 7 out 10 Steelies on plugs. The rebel Crawdad and CD 5 Rapala were the plugs that got the fish to bite. Backtrolling the crawdad plug slowly later in the day and casting the Rapala across the current and riffles in the morning were the keys to getting bit. We bounced and drifted the bait in various spots on our drift from the Irongate hatchery to the Klamathon Bridge and did not even get a sniff. It seems they enjoyed the plugs smeared with Pro Cure crawdad gel and Shrimp/Krill oil better, go figure. The winter weather has been pretty mild other than some freezing cold and scattered showers, otherwise it has been great fishing weather we have even had some sun and near 50 temperatures during the day. It is a great time to get out on the river especially during the week; we were the only boat out on Monday fishing.
