Eagle Lake Fish Report
Eagle Lake - Susanville, CA (Lassen County)

The surface of the south basin full of weeds. Wind is needed to clear the water. The food supply (minnows and zooplankton) remain suspended over deeper water (20+ feet) although they are close to the top (upper 5 feet of the water column) for most of the morning. But, on flat water with the sun high in the sky we are finding quite a few at the 20-21 feet depth on the east side and in the middle.
Best trolling flies are brown/cinnamon leeches and tui chub minnow patterns. Besides the lake surface being dirty the water temps are holding in the low to mid 50s. Bait fishing up by the Youth Camp and Biology station is beginning to produce but if you head up there by boat, be careful of the rock piles….there are now rocks exposed on Miners Point out in the middle of the south basin.
The fishing has been good for some and not so good for others. One day has fished different from any other. There have been more trout moving into the Youth Camp and Biology Station but once we see a cold storm and the water temps drop below 50F (46F is a trigger point) these trout will head back down south for slightly warmer water. Florescent orange needlefish, cop car and minnow imitations as well as trolling nightcrawlers has done the trick. Watch out for the major rock pile as the buoys have been removed from it. There are a few more trout on the north side of Miners Point and the south side of Pelican Point but they are holding out in deeper water rather than on the shallow rock piles. There are a few in close, but the numbers seem to be holding over deeper water. Orange, brown and tui chub trolling flies as well as florescent orange and pearl needlefish. Shore fishing at the Youth Camp/Biology Station is picking up but it’s been pretty tough fishing from shore this week.
