A Glory Hole Sports' employee John Liechty has started a fishing guide service, along with his father Dan Liechty, who has been a fly-fishing and bass fishing guide in the Sierra for 20+ years.

John has worked with his dad since he was a small boy, both guiding and at their fly-fishing shop. John is a tournament bass angler, and has caught many big fish, including the 17.4-pounder he caught last year. He and his dad offer both fly fishing and conventional fishing trips to New Melones and many other area lakes and streams. John is the only guide to offer fly-fishing lessons on New Melones.

John has a different approach than most guides. He really loves to teach people how to fish so that they can be successful on their own. He is not the guy to go out with to troll for kokanee. But for any other species of fish, especially bass, he is an excellent choice.

At the store here, we get so many customers who are looking for an opportunity for their kids to "just catch a fish." John is the guy to go out with. He can put you on whatever species are biting, whether it be bass, trout, or bluegill. And you will leave with the knowledge of how to be successful on your own, from the bank or boat. He really enjoys seeing someone light up when they reel in their first fish.

He offers great rates. He currently has an afternoon 3-4 hour trip on Melones for $150. One or two people, and if there is a child, as well, there is no extra fee.

In addition to guiding on Melones, John and his dad are the only guides to offer trips on high-country lakes Alpine and Spicer and the north fork of the Stanislaus. A trip to these very scenic areas will get you out of the heat and into a beautiful location with some great fishing.

While his guide service is in no way affiliated with Glory Hole Sports, I hold my employee John in highest esteem and have no reservations telling you that you will have a great time if you book a trip with him!

If you are looking for a change to learn some basic fishing techniques, or just want to go out for the afternoon and have a fun time on the lake, contact John.
