A quick note about locations: Kevin has been fishing in the Smith River in Northern California, and Team Brock just won the steelhead derby there for the 2nd year in a row! He'll be presenting seminars at Bass Pro Shop in Manteca this weekend, and at the Sacramento Boat Show on March 10 and 11. See below for details.

The steelhead season on the Smith River has been very consistent this year. We've been fishing every day, and in the previous week we have had 6 doubles, yes, 6 double hookups on the monster steelhead that the Smith River is famous for. Most recent steelhead are in the 8 to 10 pound class, up to about 13 pounds.

The steelhead are being caught on Pro-cure roe with a black size four barbless Owner SSW hook. The leader is eight or 10-pound fluorocarbon, attached to a 12 pound test main line.

It's been a great season on the Smith River!

Team Brock Wins Smith River Steelhead Fishing Tourney for Second Consecutive Year. Not only has the Smith River fishing been great, but for the second year in a row, Team Brock has won the Rowdy Creek Hatchery Steelhead Derby. As reported by Steve Carson, Outdoor Columnist in the Chico Enterprise-Record:

Regarding the Rowdy Creek Derby, Brock noted, "The two anglers in my boat were 30-year veterans of the derby, Ron McGowan and Bob Pestoni of St. Helena, and they did a terrific job of landing the fish they hooked. Scoring is based on the cumulative inches of all steelhead caught. At the end of day one of the derby, we were in second place behind the team of Early and Kutzky.

We had a great second day, and ended up winning for overall points, most points by a team, and most points by an individual angler. Unfortunately, we did not manage to get the single largest fish category. This is a great derby that benefits the local hatchery."

Sacramento International Sportsmen's Expo
The International Sportsmen's Expo in Sacramento in late January was a great success. Wow, what a show! There were lots and lots of people, seminars, and radio shows. I met with many of the top names in the industry, including Buzz Ramsey, Scott Hagen, Sep Hendrickson, Steve Carson, and many others representing the Who's Who of the professional fishing industry. Thanks to all that stopped by the booth to say hi, it was great seeing everyone!
