Sacramento River Salmon Bite Slow, Striper Action Better
Sacramento River - CA
by Steve Carson
8-4-2011
Salmon anglers on the Sacramento River have been seeing little success, reported Garret Sinclair at the Tackle Box in Chico. "Things are very slow for salmon on the Sacramento, only a couple of fish are being caught each day", said Sinclair. "There are salmon spread out from Knights Landing all the way to the Barge Hole, and there are a lot of fish still down in the ocean. The ones being caught are very bright, and are averaging about 20 pounds.
"Best lures are silver/chartreuse Luhr Jensen Kwikfish in the K15 or K16 size, depending on the current. In faster current, use the K15 size, and in slower current the K16 is better. Some fish are also being caught on Pro-cure roe."
Sinclair tipped, "Some decent numbers of stripers from 20 inches to about 14 pounds are being caught down by Butte City. Most of the stripers are being caught on cut baits like sardines, but some are also being fooled by crankbaits or 12-inch black plastic worms. The best action has been at night."
