Snow Flowers now in bloom
Lake Davis - Portola, CA (Plumas County)
by Don Quilici
6-7-2007
The Davis Lake, Calif. area, north of Portola, (about 80 miles from Carson City via U.S. 395, Calif. S.R. 70 and Grizzly Road) has some displays of colorful wildflowers blooming at the present time.
The best location to enjoy the wildflowers is about one mile south of the U.S.F.S. Lightning Tree Campground.
As you drive along that side of the lake, you will see patches of purple Lupine and yellow Skunk Cabbage, mixed in with tiny, white or yellow flowers, interspersed with open areas and pine trees.
If you park, walk and if you look very carefully, you will also see Snow Flowers blooming. They are usually located in an open area near a pine tree. This rare and bright-red flower only blooms in those type of forested areas, where snow has recently melted.
Remember it is against the law to disturb a Snow Flower. Do not pick or dig!
When parking or walking along the roadside, be careful of the high-speed traffic whizzing by on Grizzly Road.
?ĮTake a camera and enjoy Mother Nature's handiwork.
