Los Vaqueros Reservoir - Livermore, CA (Contra Costa County)

Paul Clouse and Al Hurwitz trolled Los Vaqueros Reservoir on January 9, 2025, looking mainly for Rainbow Trout. After a slow beginning, we started hooking up with some Rainbows in Howden Cove, keeping one weighing 2.4 pounds. The action really picked up in East Cove in the early afternoon when we caught two beautiful Mt. Lassen Rainbows, pictured below with Al (upper frame, 4.1 pounds) and Paul (lower frame, 4.4 pounds). Terrific fights on light tackle! We used chrome colored spoons (with scent applied), including a Kastmaster and a Mooselook Wobbler, trolled 7.5-10 feet below the surface. Trolling speed was 2.3 mph. The water clarity is improving every week, and the surface water temperature is now around 55 degrees. Smaller Trout were released, while we kept the three largest. Beautiful day with moderate winds.

We are finally seeing a return to some quality trolling catches and anticipate that good action will continue in the weeks ahead. We thank the very helpful LVR staff for making the outing so enjoyable!

All the best,
Paul Clouse, Lafayette
