Our fall trout season is under way, but with very few salmon spawning in the Redding area, it will be a different kind of year. This is the time of the year referred to as the egg drop, although this year there doesn't seem to be much of that going on. The egg drop period is when ripe King salmon are holding throughout the Sac River in the Redding area and are ready to or are actively spawning. Salmon eggs will drop from the ripe hens in the river and the resident rainbow trout are there to eat every last one of them as they tumble over the rocks downsteam. When the trout are eating salmon eggs its not hard to fool them into biting a 8mm bead or taking some natural cured roe as it drifts past them. These presentations will definitely take some fish this fall, but it probably won't be like most years. Backtrolling plugs is another option and can get some bites from some of the bigger trout in the river. Todays trip confirms that plugs will take big river trout and steelhead. We have some available dates for our fall and winter trout fishery for those who may be interested in a shot at a trophy rainbow trout. Call or text Jaynie at (530) 510-2925. Thank you!
