Paul Clouse of Lafayette, Al Hurwitz of Saratoga, and Abbey Lev of Sunnyvale trolled San Pablo Reservoir on 7/28/2022, trying to hook up with Spotted Bass and Largemouth Bass. We trolled a variety of Rapalas in various colors and caught 2 Largemouth Bass and 2 Spotted Bass. There were a number of strikes which didn't stay pinned. We applied scent to the lures. Speedy Shiners and Rooster Tails were unsuccessful. The lake was quite clear and had dropped to a moderate degree. Surface water temperature was 70-72 degrees. The fish were numerous on the fish finder unit, and were located from 7-25 feet below the surface in 30-50 foot water columns, requiring us to troll at a variety of depths. Most of the fish were located North of Scow Canyon on the eastern shore of the lake. Strong westerly winds made trolling difficult at times. Ideally trollers should try to use sonar units to identify the Bass populations in the lake, since the fish are concentrated in certain parts of the reservoir at a variety of depths. Trolling for Largemouth and Spotted Bass should continue to be successful throughout the summer months and into the fall.
