This week the Upper Kern was stocked in Section 5, Powerhouse #3 to Fairview Dam, and Section 6, Fairview Dam to Johnsondale Bridge. Next week the DFWL trout plants scheduled throughout the 20-mile stretch of the Upper Kern. During most years fishing is difficult during this time due to snowmelt; however, this year’s dismal snowpack has made for excellent fishing. Anglers have been scoring fish with split-shotted salmon eggs, crickets, or spinners. Fly anglers are using attractor nymphs, streamers, and dry flies in the late afternoon hatches. In the Lower Kern, trout can be found with salmon eggs, Chartreuse garlic Powerbait and spinners. The Smallmouth Bass action is good with soft plastics, jigs, and small crankbaits. Catfish are going for cut baits and nightcrawlers. At the time of reporting, the Upper Kern River at Kernville was flowing at 255 CFS and the Lower Kern River was flowing at 459 CFS.
