For the second week in a row the Upper Kern River was stocked in all three sections. The flows are around 300 CFS and the water is clear. The 20-mile stretch of the Upper Kern is loaded with trout and remains one of the best bets. Anglers are scoring fish with salmon eggs, crickets and mousetails. One of our contacts hit the Upper Kern earlier this week and limited quickly with split-shotted salmon eggs.
The Upper Kern River was stocked this week in the following sections: Section 4, Powerhouse #3 to Riverside Park in Kernville; Section 5, Fairview Dam to Lazy River Lodge; Section 6, Fairview Dam to Johnsondale Bridge. Anywhere there is easy access to the river would be a good section to fish.
The Lower Kern River flows are very low, and many areas are easily accessible. The Lower Kern bass bite is fair on crankbaits, jigs and spinners. Catfish can be found on dip baits, nightcrawlers and cut baits. At the time of reporting, the Upper Kern River was flowing at 297 CFS and the Lower Kern River was flowing at 149 CFS.
