Hi Marcie-
Paul Clouse of Lafayette, Al Hurwitz of Saratoga, and Abbey Lev of Sunnyvale trolled San Pablo Reservoir on November 4, 2021. We were hoping to catch Rainbow Trout before the last day of the season on 11/14/21. We had five strikes and caught four Mt. Lassen Rainbows, the largest being 1.5 lbs. We released all but the largest fish which was given to one of our neighbors to eat. We trolled with Speedy Shiners, Panther Martin Spinners, Rooster Tail Spinners, and a variety of Rapala trolling lures. The lures were used throughout the lake and we’re trolled at various depths (5-25 feet below the surface in 30-40 foot water columns). Scent was liberally applied to the lures. The bites were mainly at the South end of the lake not too far from the buoy line near the private boat launch ramp. The water was was only slightly stained, with a surface temperature ranging from 63-65 degrees. The lake level had risen considerably in recent days.
There were literally hundreds if not thousands of fish at different depths seen on our sonar unit, but it was extremely difficult to get them to bite (in spite of our using the above “tried and true” artificial baits for Rainbows). We think the tough bite may have been due to changing weather and somewhat unstable atmospheric pressure conditions. Whatever the reason, we now know there are plenty of fish to be caught in the lake, so we’ll be back in a week to give it another shot.
All the best, Dr. Al Hurwitz
