Today was the Sacramento River King salmon opener below Red Bluff.  We've been getting reports of lots of salmon in the ocean and the forecasted run for the Sacramento River was estimated to be above average comparing the past few years.  Captains Justin Thompson, Kenny Turner, Kevin Stonebarger and myself set out at first light to see what we could stir up, and to sample this years start of our in river King salmon fishery.  In a known fishing hole that holds King salmon in the Red Bluff area, we set up and waited for the legal opening of the river with 10 other boats.  First light came and went without a single net coming out, but that didnt last long.  Just as the sun peered over the horizon, Captain Justins rod doubled over and it was, fish on!  It didnt take long and we had 5 big, bright King salmon in the fish box.  Lots of boat pressure in every hole around Red Bluff surely played a role on the bite slowing by around 9:00 am.  We fished a few more holes and called it a day, satisfied our opening day outing was a success.  There were plenty of salmon in the river already, but the numbers will just build from here on until the end of October.  Thats a lot of days of fall King salmon fishing, and with 3 salmon guides available, we have plenty of open dates waiting for our salmon fishing clients.  Its going to be a great year of salmon fishing on the Sacramento River and isn't one you're going to want to miss.
