Shasta Lake water temps have been nailed down in the 48-49 degree range for what seems like an eternity! Its no secret that rainbow trout and King salmon love cold water, but brown trout like to hang out in water a bit warmer than what we've been seeing in Shasta Lake this winter. Its made for a banner season for big rainbows, but the brown trout have been much more difficult to find. They are still around in big numbers, they just havent been as active as I would hope for. Sure, we've caught browns up to 8 lbs already, but I'd like to get back to hooking into 3-5 big browns vs. 1-2 browns on a good day. Looking ahead, we will have the warmer weather I've been waiting for and that should pull the browns back up into the skinny water where it will warm up first. Although browns tend to find their happy place in 57-60 degree water, getting into the low 50's in the next week or so should really get them fired up! I fish for most of the remaining days this month so you'll see it here first if the bite picks up the way I'm thinking it will.
