GENERAL CONDITIONS
Here is the fishing report from Captain Jacob at the Del Valle Marina:
The lake temperature has been dropping into the mid to low-60s. The lake level has been dropped as Del Valle prepares for the fall and winter seasons.
Sunfish are always a good bet out at Lake Del Valle. We recommend using jumbo red worms. Bluegill are found mostly in weed mats or under wooden structure near the shoreline. Sunfish are always a great option for younger anglers, and are easy fish to catch for kids!
CATFISH
Catfish have been biting well on anchovies and sardines. Many are still being caught out in the coves of Heron Bay or at the fallen trees that are by shore along the west beach.
TROUT
With the milder water temps and our first stocks of the season, we are getting reports of trout getting caught on Powerbait and micetails. They are still waiting for cooler water, so the best place to fish for trout now is off a boat out by the dam. Another great place to catch some good-sized trout is along the east beach. We are seeing loads of anglers catching their limits of trout along the beach.
BASS
Small and largemouth bass have been feeding on the top of the water. They have been biting aggressively on medium sized Spooks. The largemouth bass have been especially voracious on the top, and a good subsurface jerk bait would be a good bet as well. We recommend working the rock points in the narrows or along reed patches in the coves that are bottoming out. With winter approaching, the largemouth and smallmouth have been voracious in feeding. The smallmouth are REALLY going after small paddletail swimbaits and Kastmasters.
STRIPED BASS
The striped bass are not boiling anymore but are still feeding on bait, mostly anchovies up near the dam. You can still throw swimbaits at the points along the shoreline and the rock point at the Hetch Hetchy group campsite is one of the best places. Anchovies and sardines have been great bait to throw from shore; you just want to get out into the channel as far as you can. From boat, the rock points near the shoreline are a good place to target with bait. If you are here in the early morning, there are a few smaller schools running in Heron Bay. Swimbaits are a good lure to use with a forktailed rubber fluke being a reliable option.
As always good luck fishing – Captain Jacob
