Windy conditions and warm weather are keeping most off the water these days. But most venturing out and finding their fair-to-good fishing for either striped bass, largemouth bass and salmon. On the striped bass scene, last week on the San Joaquin River in front of Eddo’s in about 9 feet of water two striped bass weighing 25 and 29 pounds were caught and released trolling shallow-running YoZuris lures while in the south and eastern sections of the Delta in Middle River, Old River and it’s tributaries the large and small mouth bass fishing has been exceptional tossing swimsuits, crank baits and spinnerbaits. Two weeks ago the salmon fishing opened on the Sacramento, feather, American and Mokelumne Rivers in past years there hasn’t been much fanfare about the opener until later in the year due to high water temperatures. But this year on the opening day, July 16, there were reports of at least 2 salmon that were caught trolling double-bladed spinners on the Old Sacramento River off vireo’s Resort and two more taken off the Freeport Bridge. Also a 24-pounder that was caught in the Feather River. It is evident that there are fish in the system and from these results it will only get better as we move into August and September. Good numbers of striped bass showing near Discovery Park in the American River soaking cut sardines. The stripers have been averaging between 4 and 5 pounds and two-fish limits are not uncommon. If you can beat the wind, the sturgeon fishing is still worth a try off the Mothball fleet and Montezuma Slough where the action has been very good tossing salmon roe, eel strips and ghost shrimp. Some are experiencing as many as 6 hookups daily.
