The Salmon are heading to various spawning grounds on the Klamath river starting below Irongate dam and all the back to mouth in Klamath Glen. As they do Steelhead from 1/2 pound to 10 pounds follow up behind them to eat loose eggs and eventually spawn themselves.
I have had clients out twice this past week bait and plug fishing as well as mostly recently fly fishing under and indicator. All methods are fun and provide multiple opportunities to hook up on a hard fighting ocean going Trout.
Tuesday my clients Joy and Scott tried fly fishing for the very first time and got a good lesson in how active these fish are. Drift fishing from below Irongate Joy and Scott had steady action on Steelhead and a few Salmon. Hooking up wasn't an issue but landing and keeping them on was haha. Steelhead are master's at spitting the harmless hook back at you. Whether your a first timer or an old timer these fish are the one the toughest to land so no one should feel bad about loosing the bug one or small one.
Now is the time book your Steelhead adventure on the Klamath river. These fish will be in the river all Winter providing months of fishing opportunities.
