GENERAL CONDITIONS
The weather this week has been beautiful with temperatures in the mid-80s to low 100s with the surface temperature at 80 degrees. Fishing this week has been good with many anglers coming in with limits of stripers.
Our good friends Al Hurwitz and Abbey Lev came out this week and this is their report:
“Al Hurwitz of Saratoga and Abbey Lev of Sunnyvale trolled the lake on 6/29/17 and caught a fair number of smallmouth bass, although most were quite small. There were a few decent sized fish, and some didn't stay pinned. We found success with Panther Martin spinners trolled 15 feet below the surface in a 20 foot water column. Applying scent to the lures seemed to help. Water surface temperature was 76-78 degrees, and the water clarity was quite good, particularly in the northern half of the lake. Trollers should work clearer water to catch smallies which are located on both sides of the lake. The fish are located off points and over subsurface structure. If trolling, expect to snag lures on hidden trees and vegetation below the water surface. The smallmouth bite should continue to improve throughout the summer.
All the best, Dr. Al Hurwitz”
CATFISH
Catfish have been starting to show up more often this week with a couple anglers coming back with fish. Most anglers are using anchovies or nightcrawlers you can also get them on mackerel. I would recommend fishing around weedbeds and tule patches.
BLACK BASS
Black bass have been biting. Most anglers are using either 4 or 6 inch Senkos and crankbaits. I would also try using swim jigs and smaller top water lures. Fish the coves, points, and fallen trees.
STRIPED BASS
Striped Bass have been the hot bite this week with many anglers having luck out on the water. Most anglers have been catching them on bait, either anchovies, mackerel or sardines. If you target them look for sandy beaches and cover in the water. Stripers have been sitting in twenty feet of water or less.
