Trinity River - Upper Fish Report for 4-17-2017
Trinity River Fishing Report & Coming Regulations
Trinity River - Upper - Lewiston, CA (Trinity County)
by Indian Creek Lodge
4-17-2017
It's no secret that the story this year has been water, water, and more water. It should come as no surprise then that the Trinity River Restoration Project's Trinity Management Council has classified this year as 'extremely wet', resulting in the following flow release schedule for the coming months.
Anglers familiar with the Trinity River know that this means fishing is on break until June, and it's the rafters et al that get the river to themselves for awhile. Of more concern to the Trinity's patrons however is the hullabaloo surrounding Chinook salmon yields.
The official word regarding salmon fishing this year is that anglers will be able to fish until August 31st according to the press release from the California Department of Wildlife's website. Expect confirmation of this when the 2017-18 supplemental fishing regulations are released on May 1st.
In the meantime the river is already running high, 1500 CFS or so, with emergency water being released from the Trinity & Lewiston dams. You can check every gauge on the Trinity at any time on the California Data Exchange website. Even with the high water, some folks are reporting mild success bringing their kids up to go smolt hunting in the fly fishing only section of the river, right below Lewiston dam. If you're after something a little more challenging, reports from the Sacramento River are consistently 20 or more fish boated per day.
