SMITH RIVER STEELHEAD REPORT
Steelhead fishing has been slow this past week on the Smith with catch rate for the most part low for most anglers. Rain, sleet and heavy snow hit the coast this past week with a good water rise on Thursday making fishing very tough due to high water. Flows did reach nearly17 feet at the Jed state park gauge and was dropping at 13 feet at the time of this report. Rain and another water rise is expected on Saturday, Sunday but rains are forecasted to slow down a bit with good fishing flows on the Smith through next week. Hopefully this last big blast of water will bring in a good run of fresh steelhead. If so, steelheading should improve with higher catch rates for anglers. Adult steelhead that are being caught on the Smith River this past week have been side drifting roe and a Quickie puffball. Back trolling Hot shots and wiggle warts in various color combos have also produced some nice steelhead. Steelhead have averaged 8 to 12 pounds with steelhead in the high teens and low twenty pound class a real possibility on this river. Daily scores reported on the Smith this week have averaged one to two fish per trip. Anglers should call ahead for current river conditions as conditions can change quickly on the Smith River.

Professional guide service will be available for guided driftboat trips on the Smith River January thru March 2008.
