Eagle Lake trout a challenge
Eagle Lake - Susanville, CA (Lassen County)

Water temps are 52 to 54 degrees and dropping. NOAA predicts some stormy weather patterns this week. Wind direction becomes critical for shore fishing, fly fishing and using small boats, kayaks or float tubes. As a note for fly fishermen/women walking the shoreline and wading: First, fish the water before you walk in it. I pulled two nice trout out of a shallow gravel bar 5 feet from shore 5 minutes after a guy walked right by them getting to a better point.
Since the storm early last week the lake has been pretty calm. By Friday (when the barometer began dropping like a rock) the fishing got tougher. Limits were caught but folks worked for them. Fly fishing was relatively productive where releasing 4 to 6 nice trout was a good day for those limited by float tubes or walking…..double digits were easy before that. The fish foraging along the shoreline have been feeding on a plethora of different critters. Mostly shrimp, scuds, snails and small leeches on the west side, scuds, minnow patterns and leeches on the east side. Trollers still hitting limits on top, but we have also see some fish caught a little deeper. Cover the bases but our most active early AM bite remains in the upper 10 feet of the water column.
