Water temperature is 54 d. clarity is good, with some staining in the river coves due to recent rains. We like to promote catch and release on New Melones. If you do so, provide us a picture and bring it in for a copy or email it to us at gloryholesports@yahoo.com so we can put it on the board or in the newsletter.
Being a source for anglers to get their fishing reports on local angling can be rewarding when their is alot of action on the lake, anglers bring in their catch to have it posted on the bragging board. I love to see the excitement in them when they come in to report the days catch, some days not so much as anglers want to know where the fish have all gone, and where they are biting... We've been out on the lake all day, and haven't caught a thing, no strikes, bites, nada...where's all the fish?? we were here two weeks ago and did great. Have you tried using power bait, What? no I don't have patience for bait fishing I want to catch something trolling..We've had a number of bank fisher..I'm not fishing the bank I'm in a boat, ok well then you should have a tremendous advantage over the bank guys that are catching 5-8 lb. trout right now. Tell you what I had an angler that landed a really nice trout trolling near the shore, I think he was using a chrome speedy shiner with Garlic power bait on the treble, trolling the surface, down to 10 ft. at 1.8 mph, 180 yds behind the boat. When he got done trolling, he reeled up, left his line dangling in the water and caught the monster at the boat, right on the surface. So he was using Garlic power bait quipped the angler? thanks for the tip.. off goes the angler with new ammo to fish another day.
Trout
January 2018 has showed that if 2017 was a great year for trout, then it should carry well on into this new year. Mid winter, atmospheric changes can have an affect on the bite as the number of trout has dropped off some with anglers having single fish outings, however quality is what's being reeled in as Bradley Begley of Sonora showed us with this 8lb. 3 oz. rainbow caught bank fishing Glory Hole using power bait.
Peter Smelser of Fallbrook was out 1/11/18 fishing Angels Cove after stopping in Glory Hole Sports for some good advice after not having any luck the prior days of fishing. After Dawn set him up with a fishing hole, and some Garlic power bait he ended up a happy bank angler with this trout, 4lb.7oz. and a 4.1 oz. the following day. Did we mention he used power bait?
Steve Camilleri of San Mateo landed a beauty, (no photo) 5 lb.10 oz. rainbow caught off the bank in Angels Cove. Yep, power bait..
Bass
Anglers report bass fishing has been well just meeh. Bass have been caught down to 40 ft. using finesse setups, ned rigs, brass spinner blade with chartreuse skirt.
Catfish
Winter time cats. Greg Dunn of Sonora landed this nice cat weighing in at 11 lbs 15 oz. He reported using pink mallow/worm combo in 15 ft. of water, Angels Cove.
Crappie
Crappie has slow for the most part, not the time of year for a good bite on these sunfish.
